Message Well... Two years ago my car would not pass smog for the life of it. After replacing 6 injectors, air filter, fuel lines, catalytic converters, and a bunch of other stuff, the car finally passed.

Well, here we are again. During those two years many problems have come around. I replaced the injectors again (first just one, then all 6 with bernie's kit) as well as the oxygen sensors.

Checked with nissan tune software and the oxygen sensors are working, maf seems to be working, tps is working, etc. No codes showing up, seems to run a little bit weak.

I gave up on it due to lack of a place to work on it and dropped it off at the shop. I was hoping they would fix the problem but this is the information the shop told me:

They heard a rod knock (naturally its the VTC solenoids) and because of this did not run it on the dyno due to fear of it locking up and taking out a wall.

They also said that the timing was erratic. The explanation they gave me was that the rod knock was causing the det sensor to throw the timing all over and that I need to get rid of that knock before they can continue.

Which (finally) leads to my question: I trust that the timing is erratic, but not that it is caused by the det sensor. Since the timing is read off the exhaust (solid sprocket) cam, what would be the culprit?

My thought is that possibly the CAS is malfunctioning, but I wanted to get some experienced opinions before replacing anything. I also think I will replace the VTC springs with JWT HD springs to get rid of the noise for awhile, until i can build a TT motor for this car.

Thanks for the help

-Steven
